Description

In the world of Big Five drones are not used exclusively for anti-poaching. While protecting the animals is top priority, monitoring them and their whereabouts is equally important, if not more so. In fact there are more drones employed in observational roles than anti-poaching.  Such drones typically take on the appearance of non-threatening animals such as birds, small mammals, and the numerous species of Antelopes known to inhabit the various regions of Africa.

One such drone type is the Eland variant. Large, imposing, and graceful, Elands are used for overt observation/patrolling operations. Not suited for combat they merely observe and gather data on the animals they are tasked with watching. Typically an Eland unit with come with a suite of Oxpecker observation drones to enhance its capabilities. These extra sets of eyes boost it's effectiveness in field. The horns are there for show, but if a situation arises demanding an Eland to engage in combat they can be used effectively.

Elands and other non-combatant drones are usually employed by conservation groups, wildlife research organizations, and NGO's. Though still expensive to purchase and maintain they are cheaper than a typical anti-poaching drone such as a Lion, Leopard, or a Buffalo. Some would argue that anti-poaching operations would not be needed if the animals were watched at all times by a fleet of observational drones. The debate is on going.
